Ellen Sutherland, B.A., J.D.

Sutherland Criminal Defence serves clients across Western Canada, in all types of criminal and quasi-criminal matters. Ellen has defended clients from a variety of offences, from Mischief and property allegations to Sexual Assault and Murder.

Ellen graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature with distinction before obtaining her Juris Doctorate from the University of Calgary. She then trained with a high-profile defence firm focusing solely on high-complexity serious matters.

Ellen has defended thousands of matters across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia, arguing cases in all levels of court, from the lower provincial Courts of Justice to the Alberta Court of Appeal. Ellen has also advocated for clients before numerous tribunals including the Parole Board of Canada, SafeRoads Alberta, and Edmonton District Soccer Association.

Ellen is currently a member of Legal Aid Alberta’s Major Cases Panel, a specialized roster of private counsel who defend clients charged with serious and complex offences, or who are subject to dangerous/long term offender designations.
